At the heart of philanthropy lies a simple question: “What can I do?” T&C’s annual philanthropy issue and summit have always sought to remind us that we can all, every one of us, do something. There are grand gestures to celebrate, yes, but also many simple acts of kindness. This year, we recognize the big checks and the big ideas, but also the acts of giving that, while smaller in dollar amount or news coverage, are equal in terms of the impact they have on lives and communities. Our cover stars—Mariska Hargitay, Michael and Isabella Strahan, Emma Heming Willis, and Bryan Stevenson—inspire us with their passion for justice and caring and community and change, and unite us in the understanding that, in those pursuits, we find common ground. “Be good to one another” is really what their message, and ours, comes down to.

Michael Strahan, former NFL star and Good Morning America anchor, has always supported cancer charities. But when his daughter @isabellastrahan was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a type of malignant tumor, he saw the playing field from a whole new perspective.
